Using Unmanaged Host Services – Your Own Server

If you are a customer that wants total control of your web site administrative functions then you might want to look at unmanaged web hosting services to give you complete remote control administration over your server. The technical side of the server can be controlled by a designated administrator that you pick to handle your web information.

You have to have a technical person to install the server and manage the server if you don’t have the expertise because you as the customer will be responsible for maintaining the server environment. That’s why unmanaged servers are recommended for individuals and businesses with server administration resources.

As far as developing applications and controlling the applications without going through technical support personnel on the managed server side, these types of servers are usually used when companies are developing real time response systems on the internet, such as geographical, science, engineering and multimedia/entertainment applications.

Unmanaged servers allow you to add extra hard disk space to increase your space capacity and many computer companies sell physical servers that are configured for unmanaged hosting applications. Companies like Dell and HP have software programs that not only will run an office network but also handle web server and development applications.

Small businesses that don’t need a server on site and deal with administrative web packages should go with the managed hosting packages that provide assistance and administrative support. Managed applications will do just fine because of the costs that are incurred with maintaining an unmanaged server. Unmanaged servers need constant upgrades of software and hardware constantly which could cost your small business a big chunk of change.

Unmanaged servers are expensive to maintain and run unless you are a small firm that develops in house web applications. The best advice is to have a consultant draw up an IT plan to see if you need this type of hosting service or not.

How to Pick a Hosting Provider

How do you choose a hosting provider when there are thousands of hosting companies available online? It’s like searching google.com trying to find restaurants. There are lots of them. Hopefully these tips will steer you in the right direction. Important factors in selecting a web hosting company include the percentage of server uptime. 99% uptime is the dream standard for server uptime, 65% is unacceptable. The higher the downtime of a server, the lower the potential for traffic at your web site. Another consideration is how much space is provided for the files that will make up your web site. How much bandwidth is in your package? Monthly bandwidth is the amount of data transfer allowed for visitors to view and use your web site.

With today’s changing trends in web hosting services, it is important to get as much server space and bandwidth as you can. This will allow for necessary updates and increased traffic to your site as it becomes more popular.

It is equally important when purchasing business web hosting that PHP and CGI access is provided; along with features such as MySQL, Real Audio, Real Video, and Cold Fusion (which some companies sell as an add on component). A crucial feature necessary for doing ecommerce is SSL, or Secure Socket Layer. This encrypts all order and credit card information until it reaches you. An SSL certificate can be purchased from most web hosting providers. Displaying it on your ecommerce web site verifies that your site transactions are safe and secure.

You will also need a domain name that reflects the nature of your business. For instance, a sports business might have a URL that is www.sydneysports.com.au . To get your own unique domain name, you must first check the availability of the name with a domain name search, offered by domain registrars such as Domain.com, Namecheap, Crucial Paradigm and the oldest registrar Network Solutions.

There are many service providers to choose from. If you do your homework, you’ll find some good deals that will fit your budget.

From .com to .au: importance of domains for your business

It was recently announced that auDA is postponing the launch of the new .au domain extension. With this in mind, we took the opportunity to explore the importance of domains and how holding more than one can benefit your business.

When to expect the new .au

auDA intends to extend their consultation period another three months to ensure the new domain extension is of benefit to all Australians. For more information on what the .au domain is, visit our dedicated .au domains page. You can also register your details on the same page to keep informed of any ongoing updates to the launch.

If you’ve been thinking a new domain is the way to go; there’s plenty of other extensions for you to consider. Holding multiple domains has always been a strong strategy to protect your brand and build trust online.

Choosing a domain name

Since the 1980s, domain names have been an essential feature for anyone wishing to launch their business online. The most popular domains in Australia are .com.au, .net.au, .com and .net. Over 95% of domains purchased this year fall under one of those four categories. These may be the most popular, but they’re far from the only domains on offer. There’s local domains like .melbourne or .sydney, general domains including .biz or .info and even emoji domains now becoming a trend.

With so many potential domains on offer, holding them all sounds expensive. But when you do the maths; it’s a very small price to pay for brand protection, better SEO rankings and building trust with your customers.

Reasons to register for multiple domains

Protect your brand reputation

Your brand name and your business reputation are one and the same. If your brand name is taken up by a website with no affiliation to your business; your reputation is on the line. It may not seem important right away when you’re a new business, but as your reputation grows there will be more people looking to profit off of your mistakes or tarnish your name. Don’t give them the chance by registering your brand name across multiple domains and keep your reputation intact from the beginning.

Avoid losing business to competitors

There are only so many unique brand names to choose from, and sometimes business’ choose similar or the same brand name. Whether intentional or not; it’s possible for these other businesses to steal your customers by using a similar domain. To prevent your customers from becoming confused, you can register multiple domain extensions so that they’re always led straight to your door.

Build trust with customers

This plays hand in hand with our first two points. The more positive experiences a customer has with your brand, the more trust you’ll be able to build with them. It only takes one poor experience to unravel this trust. If an unrelated business or a competitor has a similar domain to you, and customers don’t notice the difference, they could associate any poor experiences with your brand too. Trust is hard to build the first time, but even more difficult to rebuild a second time. Avoid a sticky situation by ensuring you hold all the relevant domains for your business name.

Builds trust with search engines

Search engines want to show users the most relevant results at all times. If you’re a local business, like a plumber in Melbourne, then a .melbourne domain could help push your site to the top. If you’re an eCommerce store with international shipping; you could hold all the country level domains to your areas of service. This way your customers should see the site that is most relevant to them in search results. There are hundreds of factors influencing your SEO rankings at any moment, with domains being only one of them. While your domain can help build trust with search engines, a complete SEO campaign will cover all the many other ranking factors.

Multiple domains but just one website

If you’re worried about the cost of hosting and running multiple websites on your different domains; there’s some good news. You only need one website which you can redirect all your existing domains to. This way you’ll be able to ensure any person looking for your business finds what they need; whether they’re searching .net, .com or even just .au.

The benefits of Microsoft Advertising for your small business

The two main players on the search engine stage are Google and Bing. Most of us are familiar with Google’s offerings, but Bing and its partners are just as valuable to your small business. Microsoft Advertising, formerly known as Bing Ads, is the official pay-per-click (PPC) service for the Microsoft Search Network, including Bing, Yahoo, and AOL.

What is Microsoft Advertising?

Microsoft Advertising is a PPC platform designed to help your business reach a specific audience, drive traffic to your website, and increase revenue. Microsoft launched its ad platform under the name Bing Ads in 2006, six years after their main competitor, Google, started offering PPC campaigns. Those early years gave Google a definite advantage in terms of brand awareness and their popularity as a PPC platform. However, Microsoft Ads have been growing quickly and offer some noticeable advantages over a Google Ads campaign.

How is it different to Google AdWords?

In many ways both the Google and Microsoft PPC platforms are the same. They both offer businesses the opportunity to bid for ad space at the top of search results or within display networks. They both provide fast results with ads going live within hours or days, and they are both very cost-effective ways to get your business noticed and increase revenue.

There are two main differences between these ad platforms. First is the search engine that they advertise on. Microsoft Advertising targets people who use the Bing search engine, which is also the default search engine across all Windows 10 operating systems. Google Ads target people using the Google search engine.

The other main difference between the two are the demographics of their search audience. According to Google holds a majority of the search audience in Australia which means their demographics are broader.

Benefits of Microsoft Advertising

If you’re trying to decide between the two big PPC players, or whether it’s worth using both in your campaign, here’s a few reasons to take on Microsoft Advertising.

Lower cost than Google

Google AdWords is incredibly popular, making it incredibly high competition. The costs for some keywords can be extreme. Research suggests it’s an average of $20.08 per click on Google but only $7.99 for Bing. There are millions of potential customers searching with Bing each month; around 137 million in Australia which equates to a 15.1% market share. So lower competition doesn’t mean less opportunity for revenue, but it could mean a higher return on investment; you spend less per ad but can still achieve huge visibility.

Import your existing ads

The team at Microsoft Advertising realise many people start with Google ads, and they aren’t looking to make you choose between platforms. They make it easy to import your existing Google ads campaign into Microsoft Advertising so that you can use the same great ad across multiple platforms. The benefit of running ads on both is that you’ll be visible to almost 100% of searchers.

Better audience targeting

Audience targeting has been a feature of PPC ads since their earliest beginnings. You can target your ads based on information like gender, age, geographic location, and plenty more on both platforms, but only Microsoft Advertising allows you to target by the day of the week, time of day, or device (i.e. mobile vs. desktop). If market research tells you that more consumers are likely to purchase your product from a computer, you can update your ads to avoid mobile searchers. If you run a time-sensitive business, like takeaway food, you can increase your ad spend at crucial hours, and decrease it at low traffic times. This boosts your cost-efficiency by making sure your ad is performing at the most opportune moments.

LinkedIn profile targeting

LinkedIn is fast becoming one of the most crucial social networks for accessing business data. Microsoft Advertising is the only PPC platform that allows you to target potential customers using their LinkedIn profile information. This is great news for B2B businesses who service a particular industry or are seeking higher ups and decision makers. You can target your ads based on:

  • Company (e.g. Microsoft)
  • Industry (e.g. Tech)
  • Job Function (e.g. Accounting)

Work with a Microsoft Advertising Partner

Microsoft Advertising is a smart choice for any business – big or small – to be more visible to searchers. Setting up an account for yourself takes time away from your business, which is why we’re here to do the hard work for you. Netregistry are an official Microsoft Advertising Partner, which means our PPC team are experts at everything Microsoft has to offer. Identify With Your Domain Name

Use common sense when choosing a domain name because your domain name, or URL, can have an impact in both the online and offline marketing of your web-site. Long or difficult to spell domain names can make people ignore your web site and it has to be pretty good for them to stick with it (for an example, go to www.thedolphinsmakemecry.com website. Short domain names register better with people’s memory and are easy to remember.

Obtain a domain name that will help you in your marketing niche and strategy. Like I stated before, you can use your business name as your URL. If your business name is already taken by someone else then get a URL name close to what you are doing. Purchasing a business name domain name isn’t the only way to go, and when a keyword domain name could do just fine.

If you plan on using the .net extension, you may want to wait on deciding your name until after you have found an available domain name that is suitable to your type of business. If you follow the steps below, you should be okay in identifying your name brand to the internet community.

Structure Your Brand Name – Put your domain name on your letterhead, business card, printed materials; put it on your phone recording, the side of your car; don’t forget to include it with your email.

Keep it Short & Memorable – Don’t get a URL that uses all 26 letters of the alphabet.

Secure a .com URL – I strongly recommend purchasing a .com domain name as opposed to a .net, .info, .biz or anything else. If your chosen domain name is not available in a .com, keep looking until you find one that isn’t taken. There is nothing wrong with the other extensions but when you have a .com extension, it sounds like you’ve been on the net a long time.

Remember, your domain name is an extension of your business and your brand of product or service.
